Mark but this flea, and mark in this,

 

How little that which thou deniest me is;

 

Me it sucked first, and now sucks thee,

 

And in this flea our two bloods mingled be;

 

Thou know'st that this cannot be said

 

A sin, or shame, or loss of maidenhead,

 

yet this enjoys before it woo,

 

And pampered swells with one blood made of two,

 

And this, alas, is more than we would do.

 

 

 

Oh stay, three lives in on flea spare,

 

Where we almost, nay more than married, are.

 

This flea is you and I, and this

 

Our marriage bed and marriage temple is;

 

Though parents grudge, and you, we are met,

 

And cloistered in these living walls of jet,

 

Though use make you apt of kill me

 

Let not to that, self-murder added be,

 

And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

 

 

 

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since

 

Purpled thy nail, blood of innocence?

 

Wherein could this flea guilty be,

 

Except in that drop which it sucked from thee?

 

Yet thou trumph'st, and say'st that thou

 

Find'st not thy self nor me the weaker now;

 

'Tis true, then learn how fasle fears be;

 

Just so much honor, when thou yield'st to me,

 

Will wast, as this flea's death took life from thee.

 

 

 

 

 

오직 이 벼룩을 보시오, 그리고 여기에서 보시오,

그대가 나를 거부하는 것이 얼마나 하찮은 것인가를;

벼룩은 먼저 나를 빨고, 이제 당신을 빨고 있소,

그리고 이 벼룩 안에서 우리 둘의 피는 뒤섞이지;

당신은 말할 수 없음을 알고 있소,

이것이 죄, 혹은 수치, 혹은 처녀성의 상실이라고

그런데도 이놈은 구애도 하기 전에 즐기고

실컷 먹고 둘의 피로 이루어진 한 피로 부풀어 있으니,

슬프다, 벼룩은 우리가 하려는 것 이상의 것을 하니.

 

 

아 멈추시오, 한 마리 벼룩 속의 셋(세 목숨)을 살리시오,

그 안에서 우리는 결혼, 그 이상의 것을 했소

이 벼룩은 그대와 나이며 그리고 이것은

우리의 첫날밤 침대이고 결혼식사원(식장)이오;

비록 부모님은 싫어하고 그대도 그렇지만, 우리는 만났고

그리고 이 살아있는 칠흑의 벽 속에 갇혔소

습관은 그대로 하여금 쉬이 나를 죽이게 하겠지만

그 죽임에 자살을 더하지 말기를

또한 셋을 죽이는 세 가지 죄의 신성모독을 더하지 말기를

 

 

잔인하고 성급하게, 그대는 그 후

순결한 피로, 그대의 손톱을 자줏빛으로 물들였는가?

어디에서 이 벼룩이 죄를 지었단 말인가

그대로부터 빤 한 방울을 제외한다면,

하지만 그대는 승리했다고 하며, 말한다

그대 자신도 나도 지금 더 약해진 것을 발견하지 못한다고;

그건 사실이요, 그러니 두려움이란 얼마나 헛된 것인지 아시오;

그대가 내게 굴복할 때,

이 벼룩의 죽음이 그대에게서 빼앗은 생명만큼, 바로

그만큼의 정조만 소모될 것이오.
