True Ease in Writing comes from Art, not Chance,

 

As those move easiest who have learn'd to dance,

 

'Tis not enough (that) no Harshness gives Offence,

 

The Sound must seem an Echo to the Sense:

 

Soft is the Strain when Zephyr gently blows,

 

And the smooth Stream in smoother Numbers flows;

 

But when loud Surges lash the sounding Shore,

 

The hoarse, rough Verse shou'd like the Torrent roar.

 

When Ajax strives, some Rock's vast Weight to throw,

 

The Line too labours, and the Words move slow;

 

Not so, when swift Camilla scours the Plain,

 

Flies o'er the unbending Corn, and skims along the Main.

 

Hear how Timotheus' vary'd Lays surprize,

그러나 재빠른 카밀라가 평지를 뛰어다닐때는 그렇지 않다.

반듯한 옥수수 밭 위를 날아다닐때나, 마인 강을 따라 미끄러지듯 갈 때.

들어보라 어떻게 티모세우스의 다양한 시들이 놀라게 하고

번갈아 가며 열정들이 오르락 내리락 하는지를.
