A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning - John Donne

 

 

 

 

As virtuous men pass mildly away,

 

And whisper to their souls to go,

 

Whilst some of their sad friends do say

 

The breath goes now, and some say, No:

 

 

So let us melt, and make no noise,

 

No tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests move;

 

'Twere profanation of our joys

 

To tell the laity our love.

 

 

Moving of th' earth brings harms and fears,

 

Men reckon what it did, and meant;

 

But trepidation of the spheres,

 

Though greater far, is innocent.

 

 

Dull sublunary lovers' love

 

(Whose soul is sense) cannot admit

 

Absence, because it doth remove

 

Those things which elemented it.

 

 

But we by a love so much refined,

 

That our selves know not what it is,

 

Inter-assured of the mind,

 

Care less, eyes, lips, and hands to miss.

 

 

Our two souls therefore, which are one,

 

Though I must go, endure not yet

 

A breach, but an expansion,

 

Like gold to airy thinness beat.

 

 

If they be two, they are two so

 

As stiff twin compasses are two;

 

Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show

 

To move, but doth, if the other do.

 

 

And though it in the center sit,

 

Yet when the other far doth roam,

 

It leans and hearkens after it,

 

And grows erect, as that comes home.

 

 

Such wilt thou be to me, who must,

 

Like th' other foot, obliquely run;

 

Thy firmness makes my circle just,

선한 사람들이 온화하게 떠나가며

자신의 영혼에게 가자고 속삭이고

그러는 동안 슬퍼하는 친구 몇몇이

이제 숨이 끊어진다, 혹은 아니다라고 말할때처럼

 

그처럼 우리도 그저 사랑에 잠겨, 아무 소리도 내지 말고

눈물의 홍수도 한숨의 폭풍도 일으키지 맙시다

속인들에게 우리의 사랑을 말하는 것은

우리의 기쁨을 더럽히는 일이니(모독하는 일이니)

 

땅의 움직임(지진)은 피해와 공포를 불러일으켜

사람들은 그 의미가 무엇인지 압니다

그러나 천체(우주)의 움직임은

더 큰 움직임일지라도, 아무런 해를 입히지 않습니다

 

따분한 달아래 연인들의(이 세상의 연인들) 사랑은

(그들의 영혼은 곧 감각과 같아) 받아들이지 못하지요

서로의 부재를, 왜냐하면 부재는 지우기 때문입니다.

사랑을 이루는 감각들을

 

그러나 우리 자신들조차 정체를 모르는

순수한 사랑에 이끌려

서로의 마음을 굳게 믿고

눈동자와 입술과 두 손을 그리워하지 않습니다

 

그러니 우리의 두 영혼은 이미 하나요

비록 나는 떠나야 하지만, 헤어지는 것이 아니라

다만 넓게 퍼질 뿐이라는 것

공기처럼 얇게 두드려 편 금박처럼 말입니다

 

만일 우리의 영혼이 하나가 아니라 둘이라면

그 둘은 튼튼한 컴퍼스의 두 다리와도 같을 것 입니다

그대의 영혼, 단단히 고정된 다리는

다른 다리가 움직일 때까지 움직이지 않습니다

 

원의 중심에 가만히 서 있다가도

멀리 있는 다른 다리가 움직이면

스스로를 기울여 그를 마주보고

그가 집으로 돌아올 때 비로소 똑바로 서게 됩니다

 

그러니 부디 당신도 그런 사람이 되어 주십시오,

비스듬히 선 채 달리는 다리와 같은 나를 위해

당신의 굳은 믿음으로 내가 반듯한 원을 그리고

출발했던 곳으로 돌아갈 수 있게
