If all the world and love were young,

 

And truth in every shepherd's tongue,

 

These pretty pleasures might me move

 

To live with thee and be thy love.

 

 

 

Time drives the flocks from field to fold

 

When rivers rage and rocks grow cold,

 

And Philomel becometh dumb;

 

The rest complains of cares to come.

 

 

 

The flowers do fade, and wanton fields

 

To wayward winter reckoning yields;

 

A honey tongue, a heart of gall,

 

Is fancy's spring, but sorrow's fall.

 

 

 

Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy beds of roses,

 

Thy cap, thy kirtle, and thy posies

 

Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten--

 

In folly ripe, in reason rotten.

 

 

 

Thy belt of straw and ivy buds,

 

Thy coral clasps and amber studs,

 

All these in me no means can move

 

To come to thee and be thy love.

 

 

 

But could youth last and love still breed,

 

Had joys no date nor age no need,

 

Then these delights my mind might move

 

To live with thee and be thy love.

 

 

 

 

온 세상과 사랑이 젊고

목동의 모든 말이 진실하다면,

이런 기쁨들이 내 마음을 움직여

너와 함께 살고 네 사랑이 될 수도 있다.

 

시간은 양떼를 들판에서 우리로 몰아 간다.

강물이 사나워지고 바위가 차가워질때.

노래하는 새들은 노래를 하지 않고,

남은 새들은 다가올 걱정에 대한 불만을 토로한다.

 

꽃은 시들고, 숲이 우거진 들판은

심술궂은 겨울에게 다 양보한다.

달콤한 말과 쓰디쓴 마음은,

화려한 봄이지만, 가을의 슬픔이네.

 

너의 가운, 신발, 꽃침대와,

꽃모자, 드레스, 꽃다발들은

이내 망가지고, 시들고 잊혀진다.

어리속음 속에서 성숙하고, 이성 앞에서 썩게 된다.

 

너의 지푸라기와 담쟁이덩굴로 만든 벨트,

산호 걸쇠와 호박이 장식된 그 벨트,

이러한 것들은 나를 움직여

너에게로 가서 네 사랑이 되게 할 수 없다.

 

그러나 젊음이 지속되고, 사랑이 영원하다면,

기쁨이 끊임없고, 늙음에 아쉬움이 없다면

이 기쁨들이 내 마음을 움직여

너와 함께 살고 너의 사랑이 될 수도 있겠지요
